Essentially, it means making a radical shift in the way you live and sticking to that. When you make living amends, you make genuine changes to support your emotional and physical sobriety. In doing so, you promise to live a sober and honest life and never return to your old ways of lying and hurting the people you love the most. Unlike other sober living scholarships, your future is in your hands.

Because of the scholarship I received, I have been given the blessing of getting to live in a supportive home filled with other women working the program. I have also been graced with enough time to settle into this new area and find employment. When you make amends, you acknowledge and align your values to your actions by admitting wrongdoing and then living by your principles. The amends I made to her was admitting my wrongs and shortcomings due to my addiction. My living amends is being the son she deserves–someone who will do for her as she has always done for me. Today, I know my words have value whether they pay attention or not. If they didn’t pay attention, I do my best to let them suffer the consequence. If they take my words for granted, sometimes, I take a break from talking.

I am blessed with a family that gave me the support and space to seek sincere redemption – and they too endure this shaming and humiliation of their father, son, brother and uncle. After what I have gone through since my brother died in 2015, and the perpetual public humiliation of me, I am now certain I can survive anything (except a drink or a drug). The weaponization living amends of my addiction by partisan and craven factions represents a real threat to those desperate to get sober but are afraid of what may await them if they do. The science of addiction and recovery has made great strides in just the past decade. However, far too few will ever experience the miracle of recovery unless we change the stigma around addiction.

This scholarship will help me in so many ways, as my family has finally set the boundary that they will no longer enable or support my risky and self-destructive behavior. Finally, for once in my life, I had to rely upon God that after treatment at Ascension, my housing would be covered for sober living as long as I continued to do the next right thing. It gave me an opportunity to walk in faith and courage that whatever the outcome was, God had taken me this far and would give me everything I would need to stay sober.

You, at least, have done your best and can now move on. Completing Step 9 is the next step forward in recovery, regardless of how the other person responds. Sometimes it can be hard to know what to say when preparing to make amends. There may be so many times we feel we let someone down that it can be hard to know where to begin. We want to convey our heartfelt remorse but worry that our words will fall short. Along with reinforcing new behaviors and outlooks, making amends can also reduce stress.

By the grace of God, she allowed me to move into one of her homes with a scholarship that would waive the deposit and the entire first month’s rent.
